Here’s two links for abandoned and derelict cities in Russia: the link to Chernobyl shows the devastation after the nuclear pollution in 1986 – but interesting that all the industrial pipes were laid above ground to prevent pollution leaking into the soil. A little later in the slide show is an abandoned carnival and amusement park.

While the 2nd link shows a city abandoned and derelict: roads unmade, schools, falling down, the Town Hall abandoned: seemingly from a lack of care and little input from the central administration.

Clearly the parallels to Margate and Dreamland and industrial pollution from Thor, Sericol and Infratil are clear.
Perhaps too Ramsgate hasn’t emerged unscathed form partisan politics, failed governance and simple failure to upgrade infrastructure from the 1970’s.
Or regeneration as it’s technically known when the public sector has failed on a regular basis and reform and further monies and ideas are required to kick-start the rise from decline.
Or the buildings could be blown up and levelled. And the population driven away or simply drift away.
Margate has 3,000 empty properties: more than the whole council housing stock.
Or the town simply abandoned as the water and electricity fail, the shops close and the older generations die off as the younger people move away.
Maybe that’s why the only jobs now in Thanet are cancer jobs from the 1970’s: Grupo Antolin car doors based away from the West Midlands and car factories, Infratil and ChinaGate: cargo warehouses for a cargo airport by stealth built on the drinking water supply and Sericol industrial solvents leaking into the underground water supply.
Perhaps why the largest employer in Kent is the county council: if the private sector isn’t encouraged then the public sector has to be the employer of last resort from the first take of tax or fund the dole from national government.
Bloated and expensive council services then compete against the private sector for higher wages and people: funded by declining tax - or higher tax takes on the remaining private sector.
The cardboard non-jobs, wibbly targets and bloated salaries syndrome.
Perhaps why KCC has provided 11 solar panels in Kent and TDC none for the sunniest part of the UK.
Perhaps why some of the worst deprivation in Western Europe is concentrated in parts of the Kent coast.
Perhaps too why East Kent has the most polluted water supply in South East England.
Don’t tell the tourists …or your kids but I don’t think you can actually clean aviation fuel(kerosene) or mercury from the water supply once it’s in there.
Mercury certainly builds in genetic tissue (or blood and flesh): the fish and animals you eat, the water you drink accumulated in your genetic tissues to pass on to your children and grandchildren.
And they can pass it on too…the gift that keeps giving for future generations.
